Rather than dowry belonging to the man's family, I do believe that the dowry belonged to the woman and would be her private property and her husband's family legally had no right to take it from her (though in practice it might be different). This was different from the monthly stipend she'd get for herself and the upkeep stipend for her nuclear family from the family's funds. This was her private money which she technically could use however she liked and could help support her if her husband's family was stingy or didn't treat her well. Then there was a bride price which was the money the groom's family gave to the bride's family to help also to show how much they valued the bride and show appreciation for the efforts the bride's family put into raising her (and to reduce the sting of all the things that go out with the bride's dowry). Of course, different time periods and cultures have different rules. Usually the dowry would be inherited by the bride's children as well.
