Ah, yikes. That's terrifying. A hand coming out first is called a compound presentation and leads to a much higher chance of complications like dystocia, or shoulder being caught on the public bone potentially also causing nerve compression if baby makes it out and a bunch of things. In a time with no c sections, antibiotics, and the like it's especially scary.
