For three hundred years the village of Baishan has left offerings at the frozen lake and asked no questions. Ye Suihe is the first in living memory to ask one — and receive an answer. Something beneath the ice has been awake for longer than she realised, watching the village through winter after winter, and it has been waiting specifically for her.
