Chapter 13: A Town That Should Not Exist
They found the town by accident — or rather, the town found them. One moment there was empty plain; the next, there were buildings.
Ash did not seem surprised. "It moves," it explained. "It has been moving along the Wall for about four hundred years. It follows the resonance."
The town was inhabited. The people there were quiet, grey-haired regardless of age, and deeply unsurprised by the presence of the cat. One old woman bowed to Ash like a greeting between old acquaintances. "Back again," she said. "Is it time, then?" Ash said, "Almost."
